What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. RSS feeds are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people. Think of it as the "Headline News" approach to web surfing.

RSS lets you stay informed easily, by pulling summaries of the latest content from the sites you use, and displaying it in your newsreader or on your Internet start page. You save time, because you don't need to visit each site individually. And, you ensure your privacy, since you don't have to join each site's email newsletter.

Most web feeds maintain a running list of the latest items posted to a site. Each feed includes a headline and a summary that corresponds to new content on the site. It's usually text, but could also be an image, audio file, spreadsheet, or any other kind of content. Each item includes a link back to the original (full) item on the Web site, so if a headline or summary catches your interest, just click to access the full content.

How do I access RSS?

RSS/News readers (also called aggregators) will download and display RSS feeds for you. Some are "stand-alone" programs; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page. Yahoo! users can add RSS feeds to their "My Yahoo!" page. The latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers have RSS readers built into them. If you see logos like the ones below, it means the site you're viewing has a feed available.
