Lesman Seminars and Courses

We've developed a series of seminars and hands-on training sessions that can be presented in our offices or at your plant. Courses are taught by Lesman instrument specialists or in tandem with our manufacturer partners.

Our courses over the last two years have covered level technology, wireless instrumentation for plant networking, paperless recorders, PID controllers, and more. For in-plant courses, we can tailor the agenda to fit what you need most.

Coming Soon! Batch Monitoring with Paperless Recorders Time: 2.5 Hours

This session provides instruction on using the tools in Honeywell Trendview paperless recorder series batch monitoring mode, so end users get the graphical and tabular data they need:

  • Defining batch mode events and batch markers
  • Implementing batch commands: Start/stop, name, ID, and comment
  • Search by batch ID
  • Export events to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
  • Display multiple batch events

Paperless Recorders Lesman training center: Customers attend hands-on sessions about Honeywell Trendview paperless recorders.Time: 3 Hours

Paperless recorders save time and money, and make your data go farther. This program covers the basics of working with video recorders and how they can replace your paper chart recorders with a quick return on investment. These are just some of the topics we'll cover:

  • Ethernet-enabled recorders: Communicate over a plant-wide network or the Internet.
  • Data storage with dual redundancy and the integrity of Fort Knox
  • Sampling rates up to 50 times per second
  • Unsurpassed data compression: Fuzzy logging storage algorithm delivers a 10:1 data compression ratio, for increased data resolution and longer disk duration
  • Custom displays to fit your application exactly. Using trending charts, digital panel meter values, and bargraphs for indicators. See only the data you need.
  • Recording functions: Batch recording, continuous data sampling, regulatory recording to meet FDA guidelines and audit trail requirements

We can also customize this program to focus specifically on FDA regulations for the pharmaceutical industry (21CFR Part 11).

Five more hands-on training modules, in 1.5-hour to 2-hour sessions, cover the following:

  • Configuration: Setting up all functions (except remote client communications). Covers configuration through both direct-connected keyboard or PC-based TrendManager software tools
  • User/Operator: For the technicians and operators who need to understand how to get the data they need from paperless recorders
  • Maintenance: For technicians who are called upon to maintain recorders
  • Calibration: For technicians who are responsible for calibrating recorders
  • Data Analysis: Focuses on how to use TrendServer software to display graphs and events, and how to manage the database

Reducing Cost of Air with Siemens Valve Positioners Time: 3 Hours  Cost: $99 per Attendee

Leaks can be a significant source of wasted energy in an industrial compressed air system. The amount you spend to replace the lost energy caused by air leaks is considerable -- and can account for 20% or 30% of a compressor's output.

In this hands-on seminar, Siemens engineers will discuss methods to reduce air loss and increase savings. They will demonstrate the cost savings benefits, reduced service time and maintenance efficiencies that can be achieved through the use of SIPART PS2 positioners.

During the hands-on session, each attendee will configure a working PS2 valve positioner, calibrate it, learn troubleshooting methods, and make the unit communicate with a HART device.

Attendees will take home the technical materials presented. They will also receive a new HART valve positioner ($800 value, limit one per company location), and a $99 credit good toward their first purchase of two or more PS2 units.

Because plant communications can be complicated, this has been our most-requested new course. This overview will cover industrial communications for SCADA, data acquisition, control and configuration

  • Hardware vs. Protocol: Who says what, where, and how?
  • Hardware: Introducing the RS guys (232 and 485), USB, Ethernet, and fiber optic
  • Messages: Who's talking? Who's listening? Headers, data, CRC, and error-checking
  • Protocols: ASCII, Modbus, Hart®, Fieldbus, Profibus, OPC, and proprietary
  • SCADA and HMI Supervisory Software: Histories, alarms, reports, graphics, and drivers
  • Wired vs. Wireless: Where's the copper? Where's the cost?

Wireless Technology for Industry Time: 3 Hours

More than 200 customers have already attended our seminar series on wireless technology for industry.

Learn about the different wireless instruments available, how they work, and where they'll fit best in your plant. Along the way, we'll answer the following questions:

  • Is wireless really going to save us money?
  • Why are IT guys afraid of wireless? Should they be?
  • What about corporate spies? Can they break into wireless? Is it secure?
  • Cell phones don't work in my plant. Why would wireless?
  • Would walkie-talkies interfere? What about snow? Bad weather? Sun spots? Solar flares? What about RFI or electromechanical noise?
  • What does line-of-sight mean? How does it affect me?
  • How long do batteries last in the Honeywell wireless instruments?
  • What's with all the acronyms: FFR, SSR, DSSR, FHSS, FCC?

An abridged version of this seminar can also be done as a "Lunch and Learn" one-hour session.


Honeywell UDC Controller Training for Systems Integrators and Service Technicians Lesman's Training Center: Setup for UDC Controller TrainingTime: 2.5 Hours

Honeywell has recently released its new family of UDC single and dual loop digital controllers. If you commission, calibrate, install, configure, maintain, service, or start up Honeywell UDC controllers, you'll benefit from this class.

This hands-on session teaches you how the new family of controllers has changed, what's stayed the same, how to upgrade from one series to another, and how to make use of new features like Accutune III, thermocouple health diagnostics and programming via the front-panel infrared port. We'll also show you the UDC shortcuts every service tech needs to know.


Honeywell UDC Controller Training for Users Time: 2.5 Hours

As Honeywell phases out its old UDC family of controllers and replaces them with the new UDC2500/3200/3500 series controllers, you'll find this course essential to your everyday operations.

The hands-on sessions teaches you how the new family of controllers has changed, what's stayed the same, how to upgrade from one series to another, and how to make user of new features like Accutune III, thermocouple health diagnostics, and programming via the front-panel infrared port. Users who bring their own laptop computers will receive demonstration copies of Honeywell's Process Instrument Explorer software. 

This is NOT a "Basics of Process Control" course, but a session for the technical staff that works with PID loop controllers on a daily basis. The session builds on and expands users' experience and knowledge.

Course prerequisites: A working knowledge of control terminology, inputs, outputs, and the basics of PID.


Hybrid Control Time: 3 Hours

Our Hybrid Control seminar covers the basics: System overviews, architecture, hardware, remote inputs and outputs, and redundancy.

  • You'll learn how hybrid controllers differ from PLCs (decision criteria for either)
  • We'll overview the development software, including how it speeds implementation and troubleshooting
  • You'll get hands-on training on programming hybrid controllers for PID loops, setpoint programming, alarms, loop and trend screens
  • We'll cover communications, networking HMI and OPC and other software packages

Level Technologies Time: 4 Hours

Accurate, reliable measurement is essential for good industrial process control. To improve efficiency and safety, plant operators need effective ways to monitor and control material levels in a wide range of applications.

This introductory program will help you understand how to apply the right technology to your application. We'll cover continuous and point level technologies, as well as what fits best in water and wastewater, chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, mining, cement, aggregate, and bulk solids processes.
